Elder to Novice: The Art of Lectio Divina
Lectio Divina is about learning how to read again.
Growing out of the monks' own experience and practice of prayerfully reading Scripture along side the Church Fathers, this book is both an introduction and guide to the art of Lectio Divina, the ancient monastic art of ruminating on Scripture.
From inside the cover:
What is Lectio Divina?
The English translation of this Latin phrase would be: divine reading. The ancient monks called the practice of prayerful reading of the Holy Scriptures lectio divina. This traditional term refers to personal, prayerful reading of the Holy Scriptures. The word reading (lectio) may cause some misunderstanding, because we do not read the Holy Scriptures as we would read other books. We say that lectio divina is reading in the sight of God, reading in the presence of God, reading when inhabited by the Holy Spirit. It is only in this way that all the words of God can be understood and come to life in us. Lectio divina is about learning to read again!
