Karelia is the land of monks!
This candle, with molded Karelian folk symbols, allows us to travel to the region of Karelia of Northern Russia. This region, North of St Petersburg and the Svir River, is a land rich in folklore and folk symbols - and a land steeped in the monastic tradition. In Karelia folk and Christian symbols merge. So influential is this region for monks in the Russian Orthodox tradition that we modeled our little chapel after churches we found there.
